Getting Started
New students, this info is for you!
Please follow the steps below to begin your Passport to Canvas training session (new students only) or for a refresher on resetting your passwords, logging in to Canvas and beginning your Passport to Canvas orientation course.
- Visit the New Students page on the Technology Assistance Center website and complete steps 1 through 4.
- Once logged into Canvas, you should be on the Dashboard. Click on “Passport to Canvas” and read the information on the first page to learn more about the Passport to Canvas course and how to proceed through it.
What is Canvas?
Canvas, is the learning management system used by all of the Montana University System schools.聽
础听learning management system听(LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of educational courses or training programs.
At At 黑料网911, Canvas is used by every course to some degree. In fully online courses, most or all of the content and assignments will be provided through Canvas. In onsite (face-to-face) courses, the instructor will provide things such as the syllabus and course schedule through Canvas, and they may also use Canvas for submitting assignments, exams and more. Other courses, such as some of our math courses, may use Canvas as a place to provide the syllabus, course schedule, and important information about how to access a separate online platform, called MyMath Lab, for the course.聽
The learning management system, allows students to access course content for their courses, submit assignments, participate in discussions, communicate with the instructor and classmates, take quizzes and exams and more.聽
The Technology Assistance Center is responsible for the maintenance, support, and training for Canvas. So, if you ever have a question about how something works in Canvas, or you run into any problems, please do not hesitate to contact us right away so that we can help!
Passport to Canvas
Passport to Canvas is an online orientation to the Canvas LMS. Instructure, the company that owns Canvas, provides Passport to Canvas to institutions to use in training their students in the use of the Canvas LMS. However, some of the content in Passport has been altered or even removed, based on the tools and functionality our institution has chosen to use. For this reason, you may see some inconsistent module numbers. For example, perhaps we are not using the tool discussed in module 4.2, you may see a module 4.1 and then it jumps to module 4.3. Rest assured, you are not missing something important.聽
Does Passport to Canvas Have an Instructor?
Technically speaking, no. After completing some activities, such as the practice assignment and practice discussion, you should receive a grade for each of those with some feedback, within 5 minutes of submitting the assignments. This is occurring through an automated process in order to show students what it looks like when grades are posted for individual assignments. The practice quiz should automatically publish the grade immediately after you submit your responses.聽
That being said, the Passport to Canvas course is maintained by Wayne Breau in the Technology Assistance Center. If you have any questions, concerns, or run into any problems, please feel free to use the Inbox tool in Canvas to send an email to Wayne and he will respond as soon as possible.聽
Do I Have To Enroll In Passport To Canvas?
Nope. The Passport to Canvas orientation course uses some automated processes to enroll and remove students into different sections of the course, separated into alphabetical groups. You should already see Passport to Canvas as soon as you are able to login to Canvas.聽
Why is Passport to Canvas Important?
Research shows that students who attend and complete an orientation session are better prepared and more likely to succeed in reaching their educational goals. Many schools utilize a learning management system, but every school designs their LMS’s interface and provides different tools to their students and faculty. So, even if you have used a learning management system before it is important to become familiar with the way At 黑料网911 uses Canvas and the tools typically used within our courses.聽
Please note: If you previously attended another MUS school that uses Canvas, you may notice that the look and tools differ from one school’s instance to another. Although all of the MUS schools utilize Canvas, each school may choose to use different settings, options, and integrations.聽
